Course methodologies

To facilitate the integration of students from different countries and cultural backgrounds in the course the consortium has decided English will be the official teaching language for all theoretical and practical modules; considering the linguistic diversity of the consortium, it was assessed that mandatory, additional language training for all students could constitute an added academic burden to many candidates, without adding substantial benefit to their employability chances.

Spanish, Portuguese and Finnish languages will be sporadically used during practice courses, as they will involve contact with potentially non-English-speaking patients. In order to interact with those patients and to better understand their ethnic idiosyncrasy, a specific cultural programme will be planned with students during the first semester, tailored to the chosen study track. That plan will include an elective course in local culture and language training of XXX ECTS, offered by each participating institution during the first two months of any mandatory or elective mobility.

Cultural/language courses will be offered free of charge by the host institution. Additionally, the University of Oviedo will offer assistance to any enrolled student interested in studies of Spanish language and culture through the Cervantes Institute eLearning platform. The EMECC NURSING curriculum is structured into modules. Within each module there will be a combination of teaching methods such us lectures, tutorials, presentations, seminars and clinical practice, depending on their particular focus:

  • Lectures introduce the module subjects, and provide students with the theoretical grounds for a deeper understanding of nursing techniques.
  • Tutorials are intended to consolidate the subject matter. In tutorials, students discuss their solutions to exercises in supervised groups.
  • Presentations serve for practical applications and deepening of the taught material as well as for the acquisition of practical skills in potential application areas. Student presentations are intended to train the competence to speak and communicate, but also to analyze technical or scientific problems, relate them to the state-of-the-art in the corresponding subfield, solve them, present the problems, the state-of-the-art and the obtained solution, and defend their findings.
  • Seminars are intended to acquire a specialized knowledge and familiarise with specific clinic technologies and practices.
  • Evidence-based clinical practice is one of the key features of the EMMECC NURSING; the practices taught are backed by statistically significant results derived from systematic empirical research that proves their effectiveness.
  • Simulation practices will include interactive, videotaped scenarios with joint discussion of skills' application proficiency.
  • In specific modules, students will be fully involved in clinical team rotations.
  • Supporting language training will be offered in the semester previous to the clinical practices when the additional language skills may be required.

Course workload also includes self-study time for students to go through and review the course topics according to their own plans.
